No, I don't mean the usual worship we all do, the occasional fast we take and the earnest scripture reading. Those are good, no doubt but when I say 'speak', I mean the conversation that takes place between your 'soul' and God. The war that takes place between your faith and what you see.

At times, I just ramble away my thoughts to the one in heaven!! and then I realise that he is not really that far. A song was formed, deep inside.. and I thought that I would present it here.

God:
Wonderful, Wonderful
It is to me
Joyful, Joyful
When am with thee

Self:
You led me in greener pastures
and anointed me with oil
Your love is sweeter than honey
and your word sweeter than honeycomb

God:
Why is it that you have
so many worries in your little heart
Is there so much room for the worries
than for me?

Self:
At times, the night is so near
Sinful darkness engulfs me
You seem so far
and scary thoughts confound me

God:
Ain't I not the one
who protected thee
as the apple of my eye?
Would I be the one
who flees from thee
than taking your side?

Self:
Wonderful, Wonderful,
It is to me;
Joyful, Joyful
When am with thee!

Laughter - The best medicine

Behold, God will not cast away the blameless, nor will he uphold the evildoers. He will yet fill your mouth with laughing, and your lips with rejoicing (Job 8:20, 21)

Are you a smiler or a frowner? Do you naturally notice happy things, or are you a walking vessel of gloom and doom? How about laughing? When was the last time you laughed until your sides hurt, and your eyes watered, and you begged for mercy-you just couldn't laugh anymore? May be you had a girls day out, or may be you went out on a trip or perhaps tripped on a banana ;)

However long it has been, whatever your natural disposition, God promises to give you something to laugh about. He promises to walk right into your most depressing day and turn things around.

God didn't put you here to see how awful he could make you feel. I repeat. God didn't put you here to see how awful he could make you feel.

He put you here to glorify him and to enjoy life. So, invite him today into your life and tell him that you really need something to laugh about. Watch him do a miracle on your behalf. Rhoda was a young believer caught up in exciting days that followed Jesus resurrection. At first, it may have looked like everyone would turn to the risen Christ. Then came the backlash. Ugly confrontations, imprisonment, and even death were used to resist the wildfire of the gospel message. No one was safe.

Rhoda chose to participate in a fervent prayer meeting, asking God for the safe release of Peter who had been imprisoned. While they were praying, God was working. An angel broke Peter out of his confinement. Once the angel left him on the street, Peter made his way to the house where Rhoda and the others were still in prayer. He knocked on the outer door, and Rhoda went to answer. She recognised Peter's voice and got so excited she rushed back into the house to tell the news. During the next confusing minutes, Peter was left standing out in the street.

At first, the others in the house didn't believe Rhoda's report. But someone finally decided that the best way to check her story was to open the door. They found to their surprise and delight that God had answered their prayers. Rhoda had the right attitude; she just forgot an item that would have easily persuaded others - Peter himself. We may chuckle over Rhoda's insight, but it reminds us how easily we fall into the error of praying for what we don't really expect God to provide. God will not be bound by our prayers, but he often answers them with a precision we miss because we aren't paying close enough attention.

WHAT ABOUT YOU? Deciding to pray when the situation seems impossible shows how much you trust God. We need to choose the power of prayer over doubting. When we pray for rain, we ought to carry our umbrellas with us. Sometimes when we are surprised by God's answer, we end up giving an unclear report. When God's answers come knocking, open the door. That will be a choice that is pleasing to God.

(Note: An excerpt from my study bible)

God doesn't laugh - Sarah - Final Part

One of my friends wants to work for the discovery channel. He doesn't have any provision for that. But still, its a dream. A dream worth dreaming. Yeah, you might laugh. Do you have any secret dream in you? Perhaps, you had it when you were young. And now, it has died.

If someone comes and tells you that it is still worth dreaming and pursuing, what would you do? Would you believe it?

I hope you do. Not all can believe it. And Sarah certainly didn't believe. She laughed at God. Well, she didn't mean to hurt him or belittle him. But she did laugh. She had this secret wish in her to conceive and beget a child. Now, thats an ordinary wish for any woman in the world.

But Sarah was past 90. She was as good as a dead woman. Still, she hoped and longed for it. But her knowledge or brain of the world ridiculed her. It is certainly not possible for a woman of her age to conceive. Thats why she laughed.

But as I had said before, God does not laugh. He certainly knows our secret desires. He longs to fulfill them. He wants to see us happy and bulging in our happiness. And he did the same to Sarah too. Halleluiah!!!

Read this excerpt taken from Genesis 21:

Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.

Is anything too hard for the Lord?

At times, life seems so complicated. Our life happens to be standstill. Every day is like the previous day. Nothing interesting happens. If at all something happens, its so bad.

Everyone thinks that God has forgotten us. They try to console us but smirk behind our back. It is at this point, we give up. We think that there is no God on earth. Some are like this. Some are different. They think that God exists. They even believe in a super natural being. They believe that God is good and he helps mankind. But they don't believe that God loves them. They think that God loves every other person on earth except them.

Sarah also thought like that. She thought that her life was over. That God didn't care about her. That people who keep on looking down on her will continue to do so till her life ends. But she was wrong.

Genesis 18:

1 The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.
2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
3 He said, "If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by.
4 Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.
5 Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant." "Very well," they answered, "do as you say."
6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. "Quick," he said, "get three seahs [b] of fine flour and knead it and bake some bread."
7 Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it.
8 He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.
9 "Where is your wife Sarah?" they asked him. "There, in the tent," he said.
10 Then the LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son." Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him.
11 Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.
12 So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?"
13 Then the LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?'
14 Is anything too hard for the LORD ? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son."
15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, "I did not laugh."

But he said, "Yes, you did laugh."

Hagar's Inheritance

Genesis 16:

So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

And so, the slave of Sarah bore Abram a son when Abram was 86 years old. Abram was very happy and named him as Ishmael. Ishmael means "God Listens". Yes, Abram was so happy that he finally had a heir.. a heir to mention his name that he proudly named him as Ishmael.

In all this, Sarah was forgotten. She wanted her husband to be happy. To have a child that she herself could not bear. The child was indeed born. But, Sarah was no more remembered.

And then, God remembered her.

Where do I flee?

At times, we think that world is a very beautiful place to live in. Caring parents, doting husband, beautiful wife, good kids, a not so hurting wallet.. The world seems to be a heaven.

There are someother times, when we want to flee from our current situation. Or we become restless that we can't put up with our situation. It can be unemployment, a spoiled affair, death of a spouse or anything.

What situation are you in now? Are you feeling abandoned or lonely that you just want to give up and flee from the place? Before you would want to do something, read this passage.

Excerpts from Genesis 16:

Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my servant in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me."

"Your servant is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her. The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. And he said,

"Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?"

"I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered.

Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her."

The angel added, "I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count."

The angel of the LORD also said to her:
"You are now with child
and you will have a son.
You shall name him Ishmael,
for the LORD has heard of your misery.

He will be a wild donkey of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone's hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward all his brothers."

She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me."

We see that Hagar tried to flee from the current situation but God had a different purpose. She obeyed, and became the mother of a powerful nation, The Muslims. Relax, God has better plans for you. Commit your way unto him and trust him with all your heart. He will take care of the rest.

The Story of Sarah - Part V

Can Love turn into hatred? People will mock at me when they read this. But Yes, Love can definitely turn into hatred. I have seen it happen many a times. Two of my friends were deeply in love with each other. The guy involved, was very close to me and whenever we spoke, he used to sing praises of her.. No one else will ever know how much he loved her. He loved her so much that he even changed his religion.

And everything came to a halt one day, when she blankly told him that she is going to marry someone else, a person of her parents' choice. What happened next was totally unexpected. He begun to dislike her. He despised himself as much, took to drinking and couldn't come to terms with it. Whenever we had a get-together, he made it a point to insult her. With that, though I knew that the girl involved was deeply hurt, I was also sure that the guy was even more hurt. Whom would you blame here? The girl who turned back? Or the guy who hurt her twice as much? This love-hatred doesn't happen in the case of lovers alone. It can happen anywhere. Between parents, friends, siblings, colleagues..

Excerpts from Genesis 16:

Then Sarah said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my servant in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me."

"Your servant is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarah mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.

The relationship between Sarah and Hagar soured because of this. Hagar was once Sarah's confidante. Sarah loved her that much that she was willing to give away her life to Hagar. But once Hagar got something better, she looked down on Sarah.. Sarah was deeply hurt that she mistreated her.. A beautiful relationship came to an end..

Whom can we blame here? Sarah or Hager?

Story of Sarah - Part IV

It so happens that during some point in our life, we do not get what we like. At times, we try out every other measure we could do. I know one friend of mine who was trying for a job for 1 year. He didn't get any. Not that he didn't have the expertise. But how much ever hard he tried, he didn't get it. He was hopelessly shattered and grew angry and restless. His parents suggested that he continue his studies.. He didn't want to do that. All his friends had already started earning and he was not in his herd anymore. People stopped calling and even if he called they gave some excuse saying that they have some urgent work.

This same thing.. but in a more severe form happened to Sarah too. As the years were progressing, she became restless. She saw people bearing Children, growing them up and even marrying them off. She felt guilty that she was not able to bear any child to Abraham. At this point, she took one drastic step.

Excerpts from Genesis 16:

Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptia maidservant named Hagar. So she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her."

Abram agreed to what Sarai said. So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.

When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.

What Sarah didn't know was the events that were going to happen as a result of that...

Btw, My friend did take up his parents advice and did his higher studies. Now he has a high paying job and is happy. Yeah, he had to wait for 3 years.. But wasn't the wait worth it?

Story of Sarah - III

It so happened that after sometime, there was a famine in Canaan.. And Abram didn't know what to do.. Though he was instructed by God to stay in Canaan, he wondered how he would survive in a land that had famine. So he chose to go to the fertile land Egypt nearby..

And alas, there he had another problem. He saw, how wicked the Egyptian culture was. Whenever anyone sees a beautiful woman, she was taken. If she was already married, her husband was killed and she was taken. Now, Sarai was beautiful in form and it was a test to Abram. He then decided to do something strange. He asked her to save his life by telling everyone that she was his sister. Sarai knew that her life and modesty was in danger but she chose to listen to Abram.. They then tried playing their parts.. till one day they got caught..

From Genesis 12:

Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe. As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "I know what a beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'This is his wife.' Then they will kill me but will let you live. Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you."

When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that she was a very beautiful woman. And when Pharaoh's officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace. He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, menservants and maidservants, and camels.

But the LORD inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram's wife Sarai. So Pharaoh summoned Abram. "What have you done to me?" he said. "Why didn't you tell me she was your wife? Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!" Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.

In the end, we see that Abram acquired wealth but not without learning a lesson. At times, I wonder what Sarah should have done in this situation... quite tough to decide.

Story of Sarah- Part II

Genesis 12: The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

Its actually evry interesting to explore the history here. Abram's father was a idol maker and Abram was living with him. We see that God coming to Abram one fine day and asking him to leave the country. We do not know how God met him or whether it was a vision or an intuition. Sarah was ten years younger to Abram and Abram was 75 years older then. Yet, we see that Abram obeyed God, 100 percent. He immediately left the place with his wife. And there is no note saying whether Sarah fussed or refused to come. She didn't tell him, "Hey!! I have a career here, Man!! Who the hell do you think you are? You just give me orders and expect me to come?"... No, that didn't happen.

Abram was a good hard working man. Over the years, Sarah had watched her husband and knew his moods, emotions and character. She understood her husband perfectly and knew that she needs to be with her husband till death does them apart. She was 65, that didn't deter her.

How many of the women are like that?

The story of Sarah - Part I

Genesis 11: Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.

She is praised as the mother of believers! hailed as one of the most beautiful women who ever lived. Called as Sarai, which means "my princess", she holds a great lot of character which we don't even know about.

Now, who is this Sarai? You would remember that I told about Seth in my earlier post. Seth had children and grand children and so on.. and in that generation came a guy called Abraham. Christians these days regard him as 'father of all believers', jews hail him as 'their father' and muslims hail him as 'Ibrahim'. Sarai was the niece of Abraham and he later married her.

They lived in Canaan (the israel of now) with their father and Abraham's nephew, Loth. Sarai was beautiful yet graceful. She revered her husband and called him her 'master'. She took care of her home and the jewish history says that her house was always hospitably open, she prepared the dough for her house which was miraculously increased and she took care of her husband nephew.

Now all seems rosy, you would say. Abraham had the perfect wife one could wish for.. one whose beauty captivated everyone, one who respected her husband, one who was dutiful and one who was never idle... But there was one problem. Sarai was barren.

And, people looked down on her.. - To be continued.

The Appointed One!!

Genesis 4:25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, [i] saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him".

Every year, when the month of August comes, its mourning time for my friend's mother. It was during this time, her second son caught jaundice and died.. She loved him dearly and even when she had another son, she was not consoled.. I would always be surprised by the love she had for her dead child who was with her for just a few months..

If a mother can't be consoled by the death of a child, how much more would be her grievance when she loses her healthy son in murder? and how much more would it pain her to know that it was one of her other sons who killed her son? Yet, we see Eve here, praising God even at her trying moments.."God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him". Seth- Means 'The Appointed One'. Yes, he was the appointed one of God to be chosen as a patriarch for the generations to come..

Prologue : In earlier chapters itself, we found that Jealousy was the main cause of so many sins. Here too it happened that Cain became Jealous of Abel. The reason? Abel being a shepherd, chose one of his choicest flocks and gave to God whereas Cain gave just some vegetables in his Garden. God saw how much love Abel had for him and accepted his gift. This made Cain jealous of Abel and he hurt his brother without knowing that it would kill him.

Jealousy is a big sin. One should get rid of it. Otherwise, one would be ruined for life.

The painful journey starts .....

Extracted from Genesis 4:

Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man." Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.

Comments: A friend had asked for a more detailed prose and so I will try to explain more. This incident details on how the first family was started. Though God, had banished Adam and Eve from Eden, he didn't reject them forever. By submitting to sin.. to bad, and hence to satan, Adam and Eve had chosen a tough path. Immediately the world had come into Satan's power and everything was difficult for them. Worse, they had the curse too.

However, we should note here that they didn't lose the faith they had on God. When Eve gave birth to Cain, she obviously would have been in a hell of a pain, and yet, she would have prayed to God in her distress. And hence, when she delivered, she gave her testimony, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man".. Yes, its true, that God punishes us for our sins, for God is a God of righteousness and of Justice. But at the same time, he is a God of mercy too. So, when anyone cries out to God in their pain, he reaches out to them immediately as a parent..

The fall

Comments: For an usual reader, this incident might just look like eating a forbidden fruit. But if you would notice it more closely, you would see how sin evolved, from self righteousness -> jealousy -> disobedience -> blaming. Also, it reveals one particular nature of women. They are MORE vulnerable and susceptible when it comes to sweet talk. This incident has been drafted here so that women read this and be cautious.

Extracted from Genesis 3:

1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"

2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "

4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?"

10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."

11 And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?"

12 The man said, "The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it."

13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?"
The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

14 So the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this,
"Cursed are you above all the livestock
and all the wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.

15 And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring [a] and hers;
he will crush [b] your head,
and you will strike his heel."

16 To the woman he said,
"I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
with pain you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you."

17 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,'
"Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat of it
all the days of your life.

18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.

19 By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return."

20 Adam [c] named his wife Eve, [d] because she would become the mother of all the living.

21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. 22 And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." 23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side [e] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

The beginning

Extracts from Genesis 2:

The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone.
